Don't Deadhead These Roses
Deadheading roses (removing spent blooms) is a great way to encourage faster repeat flowering. At the same time, it gives the gardener a good chance to clean up and prune the shrub back into shape throughout the season. There are, however, some roses that don't benefit as much (if at all) from deadheading: old garden and species roses that only bloom once anyway so no amount of deadheading will encourage more blooms. In this video I'll show the technique on solitary and cluster-flowering roses, and also discuss some of the roses you might just "skip" when it comes time.

Robot Mower for Large, Tough & Uneven Lawn: MAMMOTION LUBA2 AWD
Просмотров 8 тыс.14 дней назад
I do enjoy looking at new garden technology, and the Luba 2 has been a fun product to test out. This robot lawn mower was built for large, tough and uneven lawns like mine. The model I looked at is rated to mow .75 acres (3000 sq. m), but they even have a model that will handle 1.25 acres (5000 sq. m). The mower and base station work together (RTK satellite technology) with 3D stereo vision to ...
Hardwood Cuttings Results: Cold Season Propagation
Просмотров 34 тыс.28 дней назад
This is a results video from the video "Easy Winter Cuttings: Hardwood Propagation" linked here: ruclips.net/video/4NONMYSK2h0/видео.html I could have given them more time for some of the slower varieties to catch up, but I really did want to give viewers a realistic idea of just how variable the results may be with this method. Some varieties struck roots at nearly 100%, but others are slower ...
Earliest Roses to Bloom Tour
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
The extremely cold hardy Scots' and Rugosa roses are the earliest to bloom in the landscape in my collection - I suppose the biological reason might be to complete the flowering season quickly so they can finish ripening their hips before winter. Here I feature the outstanding Scots' roses 'Prairie Peace', 'Doorenbos', 'Stanwell Perpetual' and the rugosas 'Blanc Double de Coubert' and 'Rosaraie...
Best Lavender for Your Garden
Просмотров 17 тыс.Месяц назад
Which type of lavender is best for your garden? It depends on what you want. If your climate is agreeable, English lavender (L. angustifolia) is an excellent choice, and to my nose it has the finest fragrance. For something similar but a little bolder, there's Lavandin (L. x intermedia) growing a little taller in general and with a stronger camphor-like scent. If you're all about the flowers, y...

Alfalfa as a Fertilizer

Planting a New Trial Rose Garden

These rose varieties aren't new to the market - just new to us! We're in the process of evaluating roses and which ones to keep and add to our stock for propagation. Much of this batch came from a generous trading partner in California with a collection of older English (David Austin) roses. We're planting them out for feedback from our visitors and, of course, from channel viewers. If you find...
Mail Order Plants: Buyer Beware

Goodness knows, I have plenty of experience ordering plants, but in recent years we've also become an online plant seller (for delivery within Canada). A Good Start for Roses: Nitrogen Supplementation
Просмотров 48 тыс.3 месяца назад
Yes, I'm singling out a single nutrient for special attention: Nitrogen. As mentioned in my previous videos on fertilizer for roses, nitrogen is only one of several nutrients required by roses in relatively high quantities, so why single it out? Because it's commonly deficient and doesn't stick around for long in the soil: regular supplementation (within reason) is likely to improve growth and ...
Portable Power - Solar Panels + Power Station by Bluetti

Last year I reviewed a power station made by Bluetti (it was the AC200P at the time) and the top viewer question was about seeing a solar panel setup. It can potentially collect 420 watt...
7 Rules for Pruning Roses

I'm revisiting the topic of rose pruning, focusing on the traditional "rules" and gardening folk wisdom. Some make a lot of sense, others depend on the situation, and yet others are without merit in my opinion. You may remember that I did this topic with basically the same points a few years ago, but since then I've upgraded from SD video to 4K, so I figured it was time for a refresh. Here's th...

Yeah, my miniature rose bush grave yard is massive. I always thought it was my poor ability, which I guess maybe it was since I didn't know the right things to do for them. I actually have 3 right now that are hanging by a thread, but at least trying to give a bit of new growth. For people who are ready to give up, just keep trying. You really have to get them into the right conditions. They may even need a serious cut down if they show signs of disease. Just don't use dirty pruning shears, clean them first.

Algae is actually a beneficial factor for the rooting process in water and you should try leaving it because it means the chlorine and other things that are in tap water have dissipated which algae does assist in that and also assist in adding oxygen to the water. When you throw it out you start that process over and over which probably is stalling out the rooting effect. Putting pothos cuttings in with other more stubborn cuttings in the water at the same time gives a similar effect

Lucky me, I found your channel doing a search on pruning & dead heading roses. Very helpful channel, thank you, nice to know the slant cut is not here or there, btw, & you've such gorgeous roses, a beautiful farm,& such a lovely location love all the bird feeders too. I have one hybrid tea, a Double Delight I've had since 1989 and I'm very interested in preserving this rose, I love that rose.. The other is a white Iceberg floribunda 2010 or it was white. I moved both to southern NH from Bostom, strangely the floribunda white Iceberg when it bloomed the second summer, the roses turned red. It was transplaneted twice, my husband dug it in first but it was too deep I moved it to another location all together. I have done a search and find some change colour slightly, but this was shocker from white to red not pink I just did a search and I see there is a variety called Burgundy Iceberg ours was certainly white in Boston, and this is a deep red not like the Burgundy, it was white when I first transplanted it in August 2016, red in 2017. It use to be very beautiful in white and very fragrant, it's still pretty just odd that is red. I wonder if it was grafted and I cut the wrong part off or damaged it when transplanting twice. In any case thank you for your channel.
